If your child was born prematurely, you've probably had regular health check-ups to monitor their progress. But here's something many parents don't realise: a specific eye condition called retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) could be an early warning sign that your child might need extra developmental support as they grow.
A major Korean study involving over 800,000 children has revealed something important. Researchers found that children with a history of ROP—a condition affecting blood vessels in premature babies' eyes—showed higher rates of developmental delay when assessed at around 4.5 to 5 years old. This matters because that's exactly when children in Singapore are preparing for primary school entry.
What the Research Found
The study looked at children born between 2014 and 2018 who completed standard developmental screening at 54–60 months (around 4.5–5 years old). Researchers assessed six key areas of development: self-care skills, thinking and problem-solving, language, fine motor skills (like holding a pencil), gross motor skills (like running and jumping), and social skills.
The key finding? Children with ROP had significantly higher chances of scoring below average in several developmental areas. The risk was strongest for gross motor development (like coordination and physical skills), but also noticeable in thinking, language, and self-care abilities.
What made this finding even more important was that the developmental delays were especially pronounced when children also had vision problems beyond just the ROP history. This suggests that premature birth, combined with eye complications, creates a double vulnerability for development.
Why This Matters for Singapore Families
Singapore has excellent medical care and screening programmes for newborns and young children. However, this research highlights a gap: children with ROP might not automatically be flagged for developmental support just because their eye condition was managed medically.
In Asia generally—and Singapore specifically—there's sometimes a tendency to focus on medical treatment without fully connecting it to broader developmental needs. A child might have perfectly acceptable vision after ROP treatment, but still benefit from extra help in motor skills, speech, or learning readiness.
This study suggests we should think more holistically. If your child had ROP, it's worth being proactive about developmental screening, especially as they approach primary school age. Early identification means early intervention—and early intervention makes a real difference.
