But one particular bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae, can sometimes cause serious infections like ear infections, sinusitis, and even pneumonia. The good news? Researchers in Brazil studied 400 healthy children aged 2 to 5 years to understand how many were silently carrying pneumococcal bacteria despite being vaccinated. The Key Findings: What the Research Tells Us
Here's what surprised researchers: nearly 4 in 10 vaccinated children (39.5%) were still carrying pneumococcal bacteria in their noses and throats. This doesn't mean the vaccine failed—these children are still protected from serious disease. Rather, it reveals that while vaccines prevent illness, they don't always prevent the bacteria from living harmlessly in a child's body.
Even more important was what types of bacteria were found. The current PCV10 vaccine used in Brazil (and similar vaccines in Singapore) covers only 10 strains out of many that exist. The study found that most of the bacteria living in children's noses were strains not covered by the PCV10 vaccine. This suggests the bacteria landscape is shifting, and older vaccine formulations may need updating.
A troubling discovery: some of these bacteria showed resistance to antibiotics, particularly penicillin. Serotype 19A was especially concerning, with 71% of samples showing resistance. This matters because if your child develops a pneumococcal infection that isn't prevented by vaccination, doctors need effective antibiotics as a backup treatment plan.
