What if your child could think like a scientist?
Imagine your Primary 5 child approaching a problem at school—or even at home—with curiosity, logic, and confidence. Not through memorisation, but through genuine thinking skills. A new research study from Frontiers in Education suggests this isn't wishful thinking. It's something schools can actually teach.
What the research found
Researchers worked with 60 Primary 5 students in two classrooms. One group received 14 weeks of explicit instruction in five core scientific thinking skills: observation, asking good questions, forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, and drawing conclusions. The other group continued with standard lessons.
The results were striking. Students who learned these scientific thinking skills showed major improvements not just in science, but in critical thinking overall—especially in problem-solving and logical reasoning. Both boys and girls benefited equally. Perhaps most importantly, the study found a strong link between scientific thinking skills and better grades across all subjects.
In other words: teaching kids how scientists think actually makes them better thinkers in general.

Three things you can do at home

- Turn everyday moments into observation practice. At the dinner table, in the park, or during a family outing, pause and ask: "What do you notice? What patterns do you see? What could we test?" This trains the scientific thinking muscles without feeling like 'school'.
