Few ideas in education have spread as rapidly as Carol Dweck's growth mindset framework. Since her 2006 book Mindset, the concept has been absorbed into teacher training, enrichment programmes, school newsletters, and parenting advice across the world — including, heavily, in Singapore.
The problem is that the popular version of growth mindset has drifted significantly from the research, and some of the most common ways parents try to apply it are either ineffective or counterproductive.
What growth mindset research actually found
Dweck's core finding, from a series of studies at Stanford and Columbia, was this: children who believe their intelligence is fixed ("I'm smart" or "I'm not smart") respond to setbacks differently from children who believe ability can be developed through effort. Fixed-mindset children tend to avoid challenges that might reveal limitations; growth-mindset children tend to interpret difficulty as information about what to practise.
Crucially, the studies found that how adults praise children shifts which mindset children develop. In a landmark study, children praised for their intelligence after succeeding at a task subsequently chose easier tasks, showed less persistence on difficult problems, and reported less enjoyment of challenges. Children praised for their effort made the opposite set of choices.
The misapplication problem
The most common misapplication is treating growth mindset as a belief to instil through assertion: telling children "you're a hard worker", "you can do anything you set your mind to", or "you haven't mastered it yet" without connecting the message to specific strategies.
A 2019 meta-analysis in Psychological Science reviewing 43 mindset intervention studies found that the effect of mindset interventions on academic outcomes was much smaller than originally reported in popular accounts — and that the interventions with the largest effects were those that combined mindset messaging with explicit strategy instruction: teaching children how to approach difficult material, not just that effort matters.
In Singapore's context, the relevance is specific: praising a child for effort alone during PSLE preparation, while not helping them develop concrete revision strategies, is unlikely to produce the improvements that growth mindset research is sometimes invoked to promise.
What actually works: process praise
The most replicated finding from Dweck's lab and subsequent studies is the power of process praise — praise that describes the specific approach a child used, rather than a global judgment of character or ability.
Compare:
- "You're so smart" — intelligence praise (fixed mindset)
- "You worked really hard" — effort praise (growth mindset, but weak)
- "You tried a different strategy when the first one didn't work — that's exactly how people get better at hard things" — process praise (strongest effect)
Process praise is harder to deliver because it requires that a parent actually observe the child's approach, not just the outcome. It also requires that a parent be present for the struggle, not just the result.
The Singapore school environment complication
Singapore's assessment-heavy school culture creates a specific mindset challenge: children receive extremely frequent performance feedback through tests, star charts, and streaming decisions. Research from NIE (National Institute of Education) on Singapore primary school contexts found that children exposed to high-frequency summative assessment without accompanying formative feedback develop stronger fixed-mindset profiles than children in lower-assessment environments.
This does not mean parents should advocate against assessment — it means the home environment needs to deliberately counterweight the signal. When a child comes home with a test result, the growth-mindset response is curiosity about the errors: "Which questions did you get wrong? Let's look at them together." Not "What score did your classmates get?"
Practical application for primary school years
- P1–P2: Focus on building the belief that brain growth happens through practice. Simple neuroscience framing works well at this age: "Every time you practise something hard, your brain makes new connections."
- P3–P4: Shift to process praise after difficult tasks. Ask "what did you try?" before asking "did you get it right?"
- P5–P6: Help children develop explicit revision strategies rather than simply increasing effort (time on task). A child who studies incorrectly for longer hours does not improve as much as one who uses spaced retrieval practice for shorter periods.
One thing to stop doing
Stop saying "yet." The "not yet" reframe — telling a child who failed "you haven't mastered it yet" — is the most widely cited growth mindset intervention and the least evidence-based. The 2019 Psychological Science meta-analysis found it had near-zero effect on academic outcomes when used in isolation. The difference is not in the word; it is in whether a concrete pathway to mastery is provided alongside it.
