The Posture-Vision Connection Nobody's Talking About

A new study published in Frontiers in Public Health has uncovered something striking: poor posture—specifically, a subtle twisting of the spine—is strongly linked to myopia in children. The research involved nearly 2,600 schoolchildren in rural northeastern China, and the findings are relevant for every parent in Singapore and across Asia.
What the Research Found
The study measured something called the "thoracic angle of trunk rotation" (ATR)—essentially, how much a child's upper spine twists out of alignment. Researchers used a simple device called a scoliometer to check this in children aged 6 to 12.
The results were eye-opening. Over half the children studied (52.8%) had myopia. But here's the key finding: for every 1-degree increase in spinal twist, a child's risk of being nearsighted jumped by 7%. Children with the most noticeable spinal misalignment had significantly higher rates of myopia compared to those with straighter posture. Even more tellingly, when researchers ranked what factors predicted myopia, spinal alignment came in as one of the top markers—beaten only by age and gender.
The association held true even after accounting for other factors like study habits and screen time, suggesting the posture-vision link is real and independent.
